WSET Level 1 Information

Who should take the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines Course?
  • You are a wine enthusiast who wish to gain a hands-on introduction into the world of wine and wants to obtain an internationally recognized wine qualification
  • You are employed in the drinks and hospitality industries and have little prior knowledge of wine in general
WSET Level 1 Award in Wines Prerequisites

Students must be at least 21 years of age at the date of enrollment.

There are no educational prerequisites to this course.

Course Outline

In this course, the following topics will be covered:

  • The main types and styles of wine
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Assessment and Certification

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is assessed by an in person, closed-book examination that consists of 30 multiple choice questions, to be completed in 45 minutes.  A minimum mark of 70% is needed to obtain certification.

In-Person Exam Sessions- Saturday, May 30th at 11:00 am or 1:00pm. 

In-Person Exam Location: House of Wine Classroom

This is a 4-week course with course access beginning Saturday, April 25th. 

Online material is accessible by candidates for 12 months from the time of the start of the course.

Study Requirements

  • Six hours of personal study time required
  • Two single hour interactive conference meetings (Optional)

Enrollment must be completed by 4/19/2020 to join this session.
