WSET Level 1 Information

Who should take the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines Course?
  • You are a wine enthusiast who wish to gain a hands-on introduction into the world of wine and wants to obtain an internationally recognized wine qualification
  • You are employed in the drinks and hospitality industries and have little prior knowledge of wine in general
WSET Level 1 Award in Wines Prerequisites

Students must be at least 21 years of age at the date of enrollment.

There are no educational prerequisites to this course.

Course Outline

In this course, the following topics will be covered:

  • The main types and styles of wine
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Assessment and Certification

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is assessed by a closed-book examination that consists of 30 multiple choice questions, to be completed in 45 minutes.  A minimum mark of 70% is needed to obtain certification.

The exam will be held on 4/22 at the Boise location and each individual Hayden satellite.  Distinct time slots will be available to take the exam in small groups so as to preserve the safety and health of all staff.  Time slots to take the exam will be available for registration mid-April.

Schedule

This is a six hour course presented in two, three-hour segments via video conferencing. There will be a 30 minute review session and 45 minute exam at the conclusion of the course on 4/22.

Wednesday Group: 4/8 2-5 pm MST and 4/15 2-5pm MST; Exam 4/22
Friday Group: 4/10 3-6pm MST and 4/17 3-6pm MST; Exam 4/22

Total Curriculum Hours including 45 minute exam: 7.25 hours

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.
