What is the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines?

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is an extremely popular course. It will teach you about the key grape varieties that are grown around the world, the regions in which they grow, and the different styles of wine that these varieties produce. It will also expand on the Systematic Approach to Wine Tasting that is introduced in the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. This course is a fantastic overview of the world of international wines and is suitable for wine enthusiasts and industry professionals.


WSET Level 2 Award in Wines

Who should take the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines Course?
  • You are a wine enthusiast with a beginner to intermediate level of wine knowledge who wishes to gain in-depth knowledge of wines and wants to obtain an internationally recognized wine qualification
  • You are employed in the drinks and hospitality industries and have some prior knowledge of wines in general and international wines in particular
WSET Level 2 Award in Wines Prerequisites

Students must be at least 21 years of age upon course enrollment.

Level 1 Award in Wines is not required to take this course. However, you should have a good base knowledge of wine before registering for WSET Level 2.

Course Outline
  • How environmental factors, grapegrowing, winemaking, and maturation techniques affect the style and qualities of wine made from key grape varieties
  • Key white grape varieties
    • Chardonnay, Pinot Gris/Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling
  • Key black grape varieties
    • Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz
  • The style and quality of wines:
    • made from 22 regionally important grape varieties
    • produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world
  • How grape varieties and winemaking processes influence key styles of:
    • Sparkling wines
    • Fortified wines
  • Key labeling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality
  • Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine
  • Principles of food and wine pairing

Assessment and Certification

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is assessed by a closed-book examination that consists of 50
multiple-choice questions, to be completed in 60 minutes.

A candidate is required to pass with a minimum mark of 55 per cent.

Tasting Glasses

You will be required to bring your own glassware to class. A great tasting glass is an extremely important tool, and Schott Zwiesel glasses are available for purchase (6 glasses for $50). Glasses will be delivered to you at the first class.

Schedule

For Fall 2020, this course is presented in an efficient two-day intensive with a separate one hour exam two weeks later. The schedule is as follows:

Instruction Day One- Saturday, September 19th- 8am-5pm

Instruction Day Two- Sunday, September 20th- 8am-5pm

Exam- Sunday, October 4th- 10am
